Seven Steps to Finding Your Pet
In the event you lose your pet, the Houston SPCA recommends that you vigorously pursue the following resources:
1. Continue to monitor pictures of animals which are housed at HSPCA at www.hspca.org, lost animals. Link to lost animals housed at local animal control agencies (BARC and HCAC) can also be found at our site.
2. Contact your local Animal Protection and Animal Control Agencies immediately. If giving a report by phone, be prepared to give a detailed physical description. It is always best to view the animals in person and if possible, leave a photograph with agencies.

4. Contact surrounding veterinary clinics and animal emergency clinics.
5. Make door-to-door inquiries in immediate and surrounding neighborhood.
6. Make flyers using clear photograph to post in your neighborhood and nearby areas.
7. Miscellaneous tips for finding your pet:
A. Most “lost” cats tend to stay in the general vicinity from which they disappeared. It is rare that they would wander out of the immediate neighborhood unless perhaps, you have recently moved. Be patient and creative in your search.
B. A “lost” dog will tend to travel into the oncoming wind. This should be your first direction of search.
After you find your pet:
A. Report back to all the facilities that you left a report with. This reduces existing paperwork and increase the agencies’ ability to match other lost pets with their owners.
B. Spay or neuter your pet. This will help alleviate your pet’s desire to roam and has many other benefits. For more information on this simple surgical procedure, call the Houston SPCA at (713) 869-7722.
